Daniel Pinchbeck is one of the leading voices in today's counter-culture, exploring the connections between psychedelics & shamanism and their importance in the modern era. It was his 2003 book, Breaking Open the Head: A Psychedelic Journey into the Heart of Contemporary Shamanism, that seems to have given him a higher profile among those interested in alternative religion and spirituality.

I recently read his most recent book 2012: The Return of Quetzalcoatl where Pinchbeck claims that we are in the final stages of a fundamental global shift from a society based on materiality to one based on spirituality. If you're at all interested in the occult and deeper thinking on spirituality and the mysteries of the universe, Daniel Pinchbeck will give you a good intro and much to think about.
